SMPTE 2110 Recording and Playback with JPEG-XS

New JPEG-XS options for StreamXpert and StreamXpress make it practical to store and play back Full HD and 4K UHD SMPTE 2110 content without the disk bandwidth and storage capacity normally required for uncompressed video.

JPEG-XS TR-07

StreamXpert and StreamXpress use the transport format defined by VSF TR-07. This standard combines JPEG-XS-compressed video with audio and ancillary data in an MPEG-2 transport stream that can be stored as a file or carried over IP.

StreamXpert

  • Records SMPTE 2110 video as JPEG-XS TR-07 files, with a user-configurable compression setting ranging from 0.6 to 4 bits per pixel.
  • Analyzes elementary-stream information and decodes video from JPEG-XS TR-07 files and live TS-over-IP streams.

StreamXpress

  • Decodes JPEG-XS TR-07 files and plays out as uncompressed ST 2110-20 video stream.
  • Audio is played out as an ST 2110-30 stream.
  • Plays out JPEG-XS TR-07 files as compressed TS-over-IP streams.

Combined with the DTA-2110 or DTA-2125, StreamXpert and StreamXpress provide a complete record/play back solution for SMPTE 2110 content, including efficient recording, real-time analysis of incoming TR-07 streams, and seamless playback of TR-07 recordings.

Licensing and Pricing

The new JPEG-XS functionality for DekTec SmartNICs is available through the following add-on software options for StreamXpert and StreamXpress. A base license for the corresponding application is required.

  • DTC-320-JXS – JPEG-XS option for StreamXpert, for recording SMPTE 2110 streams as low-bitrate TR-07 files.
    Price: €149
  • DTC-300-JXS – JPEG-XS option for StreamXpress, for playing out TR-07 files as uncompressed ST 2110-20 video and ST 2110-30 audio streams.
    Price: €49
  • SmartNIC Bundles

The JPEG-XS functionality is also available as part of the following SmartNIC bundles:

    • DTA-2110-SY-SXP-JXS
    • DTA-2125-SY-SXP-JXS

These bundles combine JPEG-XS encoding and decoding with DekTec’s professional SmartNIC hardware, providing an integrated solution for recording and playback of SMPTE 2110 video and audio.

DekTec Enables ATSC 3.0 MIMO Testing for Brazil

Generate synchronized ATSC 3.0 MIMO signals to test Brazil’s DTV+ receivers.

DekTec’s ATSC3Xpress signal-generation software, together with the DTA-2116 and upcoming DTA-2117 modulators, enables ATSC 3.0 MIMO testing for Brazil’s DTV+ system. The solution supports MIMO configurations with layered division multiplexing (LDM), allowing engineers to generate synchronized RF signals and validate receiver performance in the lab.

Brazil has selected the ATSC 3.0 physical layer for DTV+, its next-generation TV 3.0 system. Terrestrial television remains widely used across Brazil, making reliable receiver performance essential to the transition.

As Brazil leads the way into the future of digital broadcasting, DekTec’s innovative modulation solutions are helping equipment manufacturers accelerate development, ensure compliance, and deliver a reliable viewing experience to millions of households.

ATSC 3.0 MIMO Signal Generation

DekTec’s ATSC3Xpress brings advanced ATSC 3.0 MIMO signal generation directly to the lab, giving broadcasters, chipset manufacturers, receiver developers, and research organizations a powerful platform for developing and validating next-generation receivers.

With support for dual-polarized transmission, Layered MIMO Type A and Type B, MIMO combined with LDM, and mixed MIMO/SISO configurations, ATSC3Xpress makes it easy to generate complex real-world test scenarios. This enables efficient testing of advanced ATSC 3.0 and Brazilian DTV+ receiver designs using the same flexible DekTec platform already used for broadcast signal generation and analysis.

Precision Timing and Calibrated Noise Insertion

The DTA-2116 and DTA-2117 feature a precision timing architecture that enables users to synchronize multiple test modulators with nanosecond accuracy. To test MIMO receiver tolerance to timing differences, the ATSC3Xpress playback software allows adjusting relative output delays in 1 ns increments.

Combined with DekTec XpressSim fading and additive white Gaussian noise (AWGN) simulation, each synchronized RF output can be independently configured with precise signal levels and calibrated noise settings. This flexibility enables realistic, repeatable MIMO and digital radio test scenarios for validating receiver performance under challenging reception conditions.

Furthermore, StreamXpress supports Python scripting, including XpressSim integration, enabling fully automated test sequences. This improves test consistency and accelerates validation across large sets of receiver test scenarios.

Beyond Brazilian TV 3.0 testing, the same setup can be used to simulate SFN and diversity-reception conditions for DVB-T2, DAB+, and DRM+.
